This high-resolution infrared image from the James Webb Space Telescope's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) captures a section of a spiral arm in the Whirlpool Galaxy (Messier 51 / M51), located roughly 27 million light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici. Released in May 2026, the panorama details massive star-forming regions where thick, fiery filaments of red and orange dust, ionized gas, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons outline dusty stellar nurseries. Within these glowing gas clouds—spanning tens to hundreds of light-years across—Webb illuminates bright cyan pockets where intense radiation and stellar winds from newly born massive star clusters carve out cavities in their natal clouds.
