Westerlund 2 Women's Tee
This image captures Westerlund 2, a brilliant, young star cluster containing roughly 3,000 stars located approximately 20,000 light-years away in the constellation Carina. Taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, this striking composite combines near-infrared and visible-light data to cut through the thick interstellar dust, revealing an incredibly dense incubation ground for some of our galaxy's hottest, brightest, and most massive stars. The distinct four-pointed cross shapes radiating from the most brilliant stars are optical diffraction spikes unique to Hubble's structural design. Surrounding the central cluster is a dramatic, dark landscape of gas and dust pillars, which are constantly being sculpted, eroded, and pushed away by the intense stellar winds and powerful radiation blasting from the newborn stars.
