NGC 6822 Cropped Top
This panoramic composite image captures the dense, star-filled heart of the irregular dwarf galaxy NGC 6822 (also known as Barnard’s Galaxy). Released as the ESA/Webb Picture of the Month for July 2023, it combines data from the James Webb Space Telescope’s Near-InfraRed Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI). Located approximately 1.5 million light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius, NGC 6822 is a neighbor in our Local Group. The image highlights a massive field of foreground stars along with billowing yellow and green swirls of interstellar dust and gas, where dense pockets of gas-rich material are actively glowing and shaping future generations of stars.
