Sextans Cosmos Field Button-Up
This is a deep-field view of a portion of the COSMOS Field, a heavily studied patch of sky located in the constellation Sextans.
Image Credit: The image was captured by the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) using its NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) instrument.
This image is packed with thousands of background galaxies spanning vast cosmic distances and various stages of evolutionary history.
The few bright objects with distinct, prominent six-pointed diffraction spikes are foreground stars sitting inside our own Milky Way galaxy.
This specific swath of the COSMOS field has been integral to groundbreaking discoveries, including the identification of some of the most distant and earliest-formed galaxies ever observed in cosmic history.
